New Equipment to Replace Damaged Items

The last batch of four new power transformers arrived at Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP. Accordingly, a challenging transport operation to deliver heavy and outsized equipment is completed. This equipment is required for the hydraulic power plant restoration.

It was the big weight of carried items that made this transformer delivery operation complicated – each transformer weighs 235 tons (for reference, Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP turbine wheels weigh 145 tons). Due to the fact that the Abakan River bridge in the vicinity of Kamyshta station (Khakassia) had been destructed in May 2011, the power transformers were carried by railroad to open-pit coal mine Izykhsky (Podsinee settlement, Khakassia) where a special unloading platform had been built. Motor transport took over further delivery of equipment to Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP. Upon restoration of the bridge, it became possible to deliver the transformers by railroad directly to Sayanogorsk to SS HPP cargo and warehousing depot, and from there – straight to the plant.

The accident at Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP on August 17, 2009 resulted in partial damage of transformer equipment, and following its technical condition analysis, it was decided to perform full replacement. A total of 15 new single phase transformers ORTs-533000/500 of 500 kV class (three per each power unit combining two hydropower units) manufactured by OAO ZaporozhTransformator (Ukraine) will be installed at Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP. As of today, nine such transformers are already installed at the plant, and the balance will be mounted in 2013-2014 progressively with putting into service new hydropower units instead of currently operating equipment which was not damaged by the accident. Another transformer will be spared as backup.
